Eat Raw Snacks - Whole and raw, yum yum!

Work-it ideas for making whole and raw part of your diet

Eat raw snacks and three more ways to take action and and implement my first eating principle. Eating Principle 1 says: The least refined product, as close to whole and raw as possible. Get whole and raw food into your diet.

Read about all 12 Principles here

1. Snack time

Do you have something whole and raw to snack on right now if you felt like it? Can you reach into your briefcase and pull out an apple or walk up to the fridge and slice off a fat chunk of cucumber? Do you have unshelled nuts you and your kids can have fun with at snack time this afternoon?

If not, make a note straight onto your shopping list if you can, or somewhere you will find it when you get home to your list. Write down 4 items you can buy that you and your kids can snack on whenever one of you gets peckish. It must be whole and raw. Here are some ideas: They are prioritised in the order of availability, affordability and popularity in my family.

Raw nuts preferably still in their shells (Unshelled nuts lose much of their nutritional value. Just one Brazil nut - if you buy it shelled and crack it yourself - averages 100 mcg of selenium. While a Brazil nut that you buy already shelled averages 12-25 mcg.)

2. Purge

Follow this three step process to get rid of bad for you products in your house.

  1. Go through your fridge and groceries cupboard and purge everything in the lowest end of the continuum regarding whole and raw.

Fruit and veg: Throw away any stock cubes, instant sauces, instant soups and fruit flavoured jellies or drinks. Yuk, yuk. These items can hardly be called food. They poison your body and make it dependent on chemichals for satisfaction. Not only are things not nutritious, they prevent good nutrion coming in from possible other sources from being absorbed into the cell.

  2. Now go to your shopping list and replace the things you threw out with other items Flavour your food wqith garlic and fresh herbs instead of stock cubes, or find Ina parman’s range of stock powders –at least there are some real food in there. If you can not find a replacement for your item, concider simply doing without it. Replace it with something different and new. Come on stretch yourself and learn to like new things.

Do the same with grains, dairy and meat:

    • Grains: Get rid of white bread and white rice. Look at the biscuits and crackers you have. You may keep one packet for a special treat, but toss the rest. Toss everything that you depend on as a daily food source. You need to do better.
Again go to your shopping list and replace it with whole grain options.
    • Dairy and meat: If you have any processed cheese spreads or wedges in youyr fridge, toss it. Poloni or viennas? Toss. Other processed meat? Toss
Replace with fresher products. Try smooth cottage cheese and get actual meat, or skip the meat altogether and replace with tofu, beans or chickpeas. Boiled free range egg is also a goody for sandwiches.

Do not give the stuff away, throw it away. No one else should get the poison you are throwing out! If you have to purge a family favourite, grieve a little, but don’t look back. Involve your children in the activity and exlain to them what you are doing and why. It is time for something new and exciting. It is an adventure to learn new tastes and new habits.

  3. Never bring the stuff back into your house again.

Too drastic for you? Okay then, choose one product from each category to toss. Heck, just toss a single product altogether even that one replacement will help you walk up the slide!.

This can be traumatic and cathartic. Tell me about your experience. Others are doing it too, so lets chat about it. It is all about creating a community of healthier feeders and eaters.

3. Scout

Go scouting in your town for fresher produce. Find a store that sells whole nuts still in their shells.

Go visit your local farmer’s market. Plan it and make a learning experience of it for your kids.

Go look at the prices of organic food, shake your head and click your tongue, but at least take a look. Soon you will be buying some of these products and understand that the price is worth it. Scout around on the internet to see if you can find a supplier of organic food that does boxes and can deliver to your home.

Tell us what you have found. Did your kids enjoy the outing? Was it a disaster? It can be great fun, but sometimes we meet head on with obstacles. It is not easy to change our ways, but it is worth it. Let's talk about it and encourage one another.

4. Indulge

It is time to have fun with this principle. Find a way to make it wonderfully indulgent. Here are some ideas, but by all means do your own thing and share your experience with me.
